Getting started

Accounts, author profiles and where My Story works.

What is My Story, and who is it for?

My Story is a storybook maker for kids 5 to 11. Children write, draw and narrate their own picture books, then share them or order a printed copy. Younger siblings can join in with a grown-up.

How do I get started on the web?

Choose Start your first book free and a grown-up creates the account. You'll confirm that you're 18 or older and a parent, guardian or teacher, then agree to the Terms and Privacy Policy. After that you'll be asked to set a parent PIN, and you can add an author profile for your child and create a first book.

What is an author profile?

Every book belongs to an author. Each child (or student) gets their own author profile with a name and an avatar, and their own library. We suggest a first name, initials or a nickname. A grown-up can protect each author's library with its own 4-digit PIN.

Does my child need their own account?

No. Children can't create accounts. They use My Story under your account, with you nearby. On iPad and iPhone an account is optional: the app works offline, and a grown-up can sign in to keep books in sync.

Where does My Story work, and can I move books between devices?

You can use My Story in a web browser on a computer or Chromebook, with nothing to install, and as an app on iPad and iPhone. See My Story on the web.

Sign in to the same My Story account on the web and in the iPad or iPhone app, and your books stay in sync. You can also export a book as a .mystory file and import it on another device.

Is My Story free?

Creating and sharing books is free. Some extras are optional and paid: Story Sparks, which power the Magic tools, and printed books.

Making books

Pages, drawing, voice, saving and sharing.

How do I make my first book?

Open the author's library and choose Create New Book. Give it a title and pick a format: square (8.5 × 8.5 in), landscape (11 × 8.5 in) or portrait (8.5 × 11 in). Then add pages: a background, characters, text, drawings and your own voice. Your story saves as you go.

What can kids add to a page?

Drawings, colorful text, photos from the device, stickers and characters, backgrounds, recorded narration and a soundtrack. Optional extras come from outside libraries: GIFs from GIPHY, photos from Unsplash, videos from Pexels and 3D models from Sketchfab. A grown-up can switch any of these off in Settings.

Can kids record their own voice?

Yes. Tap the microphone and narrate each page, and re-record as many times as you like. Your browser asks for microphone permission first. Recordings are saved with the book. There is also an optional AI voice, Magic Narrate, which uses Story Sparks.

Are books saved automatically?

Yes, your story saves as you go. If the same book is edited on two devices, we save the newer edits as a separate copy instead of overwriting anything, so nothing is lost.

How do I share or export a book?

Open the book's Share menu. You can create a public link, which anyone can open without signing in (it stays off until you create it, and you can turn it off again), or export a .mystory file, a PDF, or a video (MP4 or WebM). To share with the Community Library, a grown-up check comes first.

What are the Magic tools?

Magic tools use AI to help with pictures, pages, animation, characters, narration and music. They use Story Sparks, and a grown-up can switch each tool off in Settings. Read how we keep them safe on the safety page.

Printing

Ordering a real picture book, and what to expect.

How do I order a printed book?

Open the book's menu in the library and choose Publish book. A grown-up check comes first. Flip through a preview of every page, choose a cover type, enter the delivery details, pick a shipping option, review the full cost and pay securely with Stripe. Learn more on the printing page.

What sizes and covers are available?

The printed book matches the format you chose for the story: square (8.5 × 8.5 in), landscape (11 × 8.5 in) or portrait (8.5 × 11 in). You can choose softcover or hardcover, and hardcover needs enough pages to bind. A landscape softcover is coil bound, so it lies flat.

How many pages can a printed book have?

At least 4 pages. The most a book can have depends on the cover type. If your book doesn't fit, the app tells you how many pages to add or remove.

How much does it cost, and how long does it take?

The price depends on the format, cover, page count, shipping and tax, and the full cost is shown before you pay. You aren't charged until the printer accepts your order. Each book is printed on demand, which typically takes 3 to 5 business days before it ships. Delivery estimates for your address appear at checkout.

Can I send it to someone else?

Yes. Enter the recipient's name and shipping address, for example Grandma's. Books are printed and shipped by our print partner, Lulu, and deliver to many countries. Some destinations need a recipient tax ID, and duties or import charges may apply to international deliveries.

Can I cancel or return an order?

Each book is printed to order, so orders generally can't be canceled once printing begins. If a book arrives damaged, misprinted or not as ordered, contact support and we'll put it right.

Hero Books

Personalized storybooks starring your child.

What are Hero Books?

Hero Books are coming soon. They're illustrated storybooks with your child as the hero. With a plan, a new book arrives every month for a year, 12 books in all. Learn more on the Hero Books page.

What do I need to start?

One photo of your child and a delivery address. You'll see their character and the first pages of their first book before you pay.

What happens to my child's photo?

The photo is only used to draw your child's character. The AI image service that draws it deletes the photo within an hour, and every book is drawn from the character, never from the photo.

Can I give a Hero Book as a gift?

Yes. Grandparents, birthdays and holidays are all good reasons. See gifts.

How much do Hero Books cost, and can I cancel?

The planned price is $38.99 per month for 12 hardcover books, shipping included, or $449 paid once. The monthly plan ends on its own after the 12th book, and you can cancel any time. Join the waitlist to hear first when they launch.

How is a Hero Book different from the books my child makes?

Hero Books are written and illustrated for your child, with your child as the hero. The books children make in My Story are entirely their own words, drawings and voice. Many families do both.

Sparks & purchases

Story Sparks, checkout and refunds.

What are Story Sparks?

Story Sparks are a virtual currency that pays for the Magic tools in the web app, such as Magic Pages, Magic Animate and Magic Characters.

How much does each Magic tool cost?

Each tool shows its Sparks cost before you use it. Sparks are used when the tool returns a result, and if a tool fails to return one, you aren't charged.

Do I get any free Sparks?

Sometimes. We may give you Sparks at no charge, for example when you first sign in. Your balance is shown in the app.

How do I buy Sparks?

Open the Story Spark Store in the app and choose a pack. A grown-up check comes first, your parent PIN or a grown-up puzzle if you haven't set one, and then you pay on Stripe's secure checkout page. We never see or store your card number. Each pack's price is shown in the store before you buy.

Do Sparks expire, and can I get a refund?

Sparks don't expire while your account is open. They have no cash value and can't be transferred or gifted. Purchases are final once the Sparks are added to your balance, except where the law says otherwise. If you were charged in error, or a purchase was made without your permission, email support@mystory.co and we'll look into it. Nothing here limits refund rights you have under local law.

How do refunds work for purchases in the iPad and iPhone app?

Purchases made in the iPad and iPhone app go through the App Store, so Apple handles their refunds.

Schools

Using My Story with a class.

Can teachers use My Story in class?

Yes. Teachers can use the free version in any browser today, creating an author profile for each student. We're also building a School Edition for Chromebook classrooms, with a teacher dashboard, class rosters and per-teacher plans. Join the waitlist.

When is the School Edition coming?

We're building it now and inviting waitlist classrooms first. It will be a subscription priced per teacher, with site licenses for schools and districts. Join the waitlist. In the meantime, a teacher can use the regular web app with their class by creating an account and choosing Teacher at sign-up.

How do students keep their work separate?

Each student gets their own author profile and library, and a grown-up can protect each one with its own PIN, so one class's work stays separate from another's.

What about student privacy?

Student work is never used for advertising, never sold, and we never use it to train AI. A school can ask us to review or delete the student information we hold by emailing support@mystory.co. Read more on the safety page.

Where can I ask about volume or district pricing?

Join the waitlist on the schools page and tell us how many teachers would use it. We'll share School Edition pricing with the waitlist first.

Account & privacy

Your data, PINs and controls.

How do I download a copy of my books?

In the web app, go to Settings, then Account, and choose Export my data. You get a ZIP with every book as a .mystory file, plus pictures, voice recordings and your account details. The download stays available for 7 days. A grown-up check comes first.

How do I delete my account?

Go to Settings, then Account, and choose Delete my account. It permanently removes your authors, books, recordings, share links, settings and sign-in, and anything you published to the Community Library. It can't be undone, so export anything you want to keep first. Unused Story Sparks are lost, and records we must keep for tax are kept with your name and email removed.

How do I change my password or sign-in method?

In Settings, under Account, you can change your password, add one if you signed up with Google or Apple, or connect another sign-in method.

How do I turn off the Community Library or a Magic tool?

In Settings, open Content & AI. You can switch off the Community Library, sharing and comments, outside photo, video, GIF and 3D sources, and each Magic tool. Switching something off applies right away, and switching it back on needs a grown-up.

What if someone forgets a PIN?

For an author's PIN, tap Forgot PIN? on the PIN screen, or edit the author, and a grown-up can set a new one. For the grown-up PIN, check the hint you set with it, or email support@mystory.co and we'll help you reset it.

How do I change my cookie choices or ask a privacy question?

Use the Cookie settings button at the bottom of any page, or Settings, then Privacy, in the web app. For privacy questions or requests about your child's information, email support@mystory.co. More on the safety page and in the privacy policy.
